Bernard's Background
Bernard grew up in the northern Alberta town of St. Paul, a farming community with strong Cree, French-Canadian and Ukrainian heritage. Bernard graduated from the University of Alberta and Western University with degrees in engineering and business. He also studied at the University of Ottawa, l’Université de Montréal and l’École des Hautes Études Commerciales in France.
Bernard worked in business consulting where he led strategy and transformation initiatives to position companies for success. As part of high-performing teams, he worked with clients in the natural resources, manufacturing, high technology, consumer goods and transportation sectors. He worked with clients across Canada, the United States and around the world. The issues he addressed with his clients revolved around two basic questions: where to compete, and how to compete?
Bernard had the privilege of working shoulder-to-shoulder with great companies in helping them grow. He developed a deep understanding of the energy and dynamism of our market-based economy.
While doing that, Bernard and his wife Susan and raised their family in Etobicoke-Lakeshore. He got involved in the community, volunteering at schools, sports leagues and community organizations. He ran in 2011 and became the Member of Parliament for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, defeating the then Leader of the Official Opposition.
While in government, he worked tirelessly to represent the people of Etobicoke-Lakeshore. He was also appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works and Government Services, and then for Foreign Affairs. Constituency work always came first since he lived by the words “never forget the people who sent you.” As your MP, he always aimed to provide the highest quality of service and represent you with integrity.
After the election of 2015 Bernard went back to the private sector as a managing partner with a global digital research and consulting firm. He also started a public affairs consulting business and became an adjudicator with Tribunals Ontario.
Bernard aims to leverage his broad private sector, government and community experience for the benefit of the people of Etobicoke-Lakeshore
